Since the last decade of the 20th century, Whapweasel have been delighting and exhausting the folk dance enthusiasts of these islands. Over that time they’ve notched up 5 albums of enthralling, turbo- charged dance music attracting rave reviews and packed dance floors and the accolade of Dance Band Of The Year at the Radio Two Folk Awards. In recent years the band have been moving purposefully into the concert arena and introducing a sprinkling of songs amid the home-grown hornpipes, jigs and polkas.

Their long awaited new album ‘Festivalis’ (WW0008) finds them lifting their voices in song for the first time in the recording studio. From the impeccably traditional to the best of the modern folk-based songwriters, ‘Festivalis’ serves up a bold, innovative synthesis of song and dance. New horizons in Whappery.

Emerging as Injured Birds do from a flourishing music scene in Nottingham which boasts contemporaries Jake Bugg, Dog Is Dead and Natalie Duncan, it could be easy to label them Indie-Folk. The sound of Injured Birds offers something of an earthy beauty - simplistic strings, harmonium piano, acoustic finger plucking and a heart-wrenching falsetto vocal that recalls Bon Iver – yet Injured Birds has bursts of something much more rustic and gritty.

The sound has more in common with the grass roots blues sound and the wonderfully direct, wryly comic and wistfully evocative feel of Injured Birds – musically and lyrically – sets them apart from any scene or contemporary.

On tracks like ‘Happy as Clams’ you can hear a serene, quirky off-kilter ode to love, with frontman Samuel Kirk’s trademark lyrical wit. And the warm, welcome sound of the ukulele washing over the track like a gentle wave over the sand.

Having been described by James Yuill as a “beautiful sonic syrup” their debut album ‘Silver Birches’ is now available in FDRHD format at 24bit 192khz and 24bit 96khz.

We're please to announce Angels in the Architecture debut album is now availible for download as an FDR version 16bit 44.1Khz for £7.99

The 10 songs on the melodic, summery LP by Angels in the Architecture singer/songwriter Simon Paterson are in part a reflection on the enthusiasm of a new band, the optimism of a new love, a statement of intent without arrogance, and a healthy dose of emotional and intellectual reflection laced with spiritual contemplation and it's perspective within the modern world.

Release Description

Each song was recorded live by Colin Elliot at Yellow Arch in Sheffield (Richard Hawley, Arctic monkeys, Klaxons, Jarvis Cocker) in just one or two takes. This meant, for example, some of the vocals could be recorded through Hawley's £5000 Telefunken U47 valve microphone, and the band (guitar, double bass, drums/percussion) could make the most of the wondrous spacious acoustic beauty of the Sheffield studio.

But it is in the tight integration of electronica into the arrangements in which Paterson has been developing his skills as a producer for ten years. At the heart of the LP are the composer's 10 songs, constructed and arranged with thought and care, recorded with fresh, live performances, embellished but not drowned out by the addition of strings, brass, analogue textures and other sonic oddities & found sounds.
